It is renowned to have thousands of rock engravings that cover 100 square km of scene hunting, people, ships, constellations and animals. Its oldest petroglyphs are dated to 12 th century BC. The Persian word of fire is called atash. The pentagonal structure with a courtyard encircled by monk cells and a tetra pillar-alter in the center was constructed in 17 th and 18 th centuries. It was left in the 19th century, being unlikely because the Indian population in the region was reducing. In 1969, the natural, eternal flame was extinguished, following close to a century of exploitation of petroleum and gas in the region, but it is currently illuminated by gas that is piped in the neighboring city.

Burning pieces of fire play on the stones and the floor.
